By ZAC BOYER“Dig Pink” a win for everyone: Defending Class M champion RHAM-Hebron will be one of six teams in the state and several nationwide to host a “Dig Pink” fundraiser for breast cancer research when it hosts Rocky Hill on Oct. 9.
“Last year we raised over $1,800,” senior Tessa Smolinski said.
The players will wear pink jerseys and sell related merchandise at the game. Those interested in donating can log on to side-out.org/news-events/ dig_pink/, click on “High Schools” on the right side and select RHAM.
The fundraiser won’t be the only reason the Sachems are in the spotlight: The team lost one starter after finishing 24-0 in 2008 and will rely upon Smolinski, Kelsey Welling, Ellie Linden and Mallory Grosso to get back to the title game. … New Britain finished 6-12 last season. “It was the first time in like 15 years that we finished without making the state tournament,” coach Michelle Abraham said. Junior outside hitter Ashley Thibault leads a team that Abraham said is willing to make the commitment necessary to win again.
